On 7 May 1934, the district of Birobidzhan was proclaimed a Jewish autonomous republic. Covering 36,000 sq. miles and with a population somewhat less than 18,000, this sparcely populated area was considerably larger than present day Israel. I assume this cancel to be originating from said state.
